SCRATCHES

 

In March 2000 we watched a lot of video-tapes in New York. At the end of one of the episodes of John Lurie's film Fishing with John - about a fishing trip with Jim Jarmush and Tom Waits - we were greatly intrigued to see a highly deformed, snow-like interference pattern on the TV screen. The tape was still in the deck, so it must have been the cause of these deformations. We decided to take photos of the "snow" with our camera (Biogon), using black-and-white slide film (Agfa Scala); we didn't freeze the frame, but just let chance record the snow as it flitted by.

Watching other video-tapes, including Mega Vixens and The Baby of Macon, we noticed scratches at the beginning of each tape, before the first image. We photographed them too and later titled them "Scratches".

En mars 2000, à New York, nous avons regardé de nombreuses vidéos. À la fin d’un des épisodes du film de John Lurie intitulé Fishing With John (une partie de pêche avec Jim Jarmush et Tom Waits), nous avons été intrigués par une étrange neige électronique très déformée sur l’écran de télévision. La cassette était toujours dans le magnétoscope et devait être à l’origine de ces déformations. Avec notre appareil photographique(Biogon) et des films positifs en noir et blanc (Agfa Scala), nous avons décidé de faire des prises de vue sans opérer d’arrêt sur image, laissant au hasard le soin de capturer la neige en mouvement.

En regardant d’autes films enregistrés sur des cassettes vidéos, dont Mega Vixens et The Baby of Macon, nous avons remarqué des accidents de début de bande, avant l’apparition de l’image ou du générique. Nous les avons également photographiés avec notre biogon et intitulés plus tard Scratches.
